As Suyash Jadhav failed to qualify for the men's 50m butterfly S7 final, India's campaign in para-swimming came to an end at the Paralympics in Paris on Saturday.

The 30-year-old Indian para-swimmer, who won a gold medal at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, last year, finished fifth in Heat 1 for clocking 33.47. His overall standing was 10th.

The top four swimmers from the two Heats were eligible to qualify for the final.

Suyash was the only Indian swimmer to qualify for the Paralympics 2024.

Apart from the Asian Para Games gold, Jadhav also won a gold medal at the Winter Open Polish Championships and IWAS World Games.

Jadhav became the first Indian para swimmer to achieve the ‘A’ qualifying mark in three straight Paralympics - Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

Hailing from Solapur, Maharashtra, Jadhav's both hands were amputated below the elbow after he accidentally touched an electric line while playing with an iron rod when he was in sixth grade.

The S7 category is for para swimmers with movement affected from a low to moderate level in arms, trunk and legs, moderately down one side, those with short stature, or the absence of limbs.

India won only one medal in para-swimming at the Paralympics so far, with Murlikant Petkar winning a gold medal in Heidelberg, West Germany, in 1972.
