ISL: Wayanad survivors turn mascots for Kerala Blasters fixture
The move is meant to foster hope and joy for the affected children.
When Kerala Blaster and Punjab FC walked out at the Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Sunday night, a set of children walked out as mascots while accompanying the players.
A customary practice and nothing worthy of a mention, one would imagine.
But not until it emerged that the children walking out with the players were survivors of the recent Wayanad landslide disaster.
All survivors
The children, not more than 12 years of age, are students of Meppadi WMO School, Vellarmala GVHSS and Mundakkai LP School.
Having lost homes and multiple members of their extended families, the children are currently living in accommodations provided by the government’s rehabilitation program.
The initiative titled 'Orumichonam', is the brainchild of the Kerala Blasters team management, the MES state committee, youth wing state committee and the Futureace Hospital Kochi.
The gesture is meant to provide a sense of normalcy in their lives while creating moments of lasting joy to help overcome the trauma.
Kerala Blasters' campaign
Earlier, as a gesture of support for families impacted by the devastating natural disaster in Wayanad, Kerala Blasters FC had launched the ‘Goal for Wayanad’ campaign and donated Rs. 25 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF).
