Former Indian hockey player and the 1975 World Cup winner Michael Kindo passed away on Thursday, aged 73. Kindo was also part of the Indian team which bagged the bronze medal during the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Besides the above mentioned achievements, Kindo was also a vital cog in the wheel for India during the 1971 and 1973 World Cup and the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran. He was reported to be suffering from age related ailments.

“Michael Kindo passed away at the Ispat General Hospital due to age related problems. He was bed-ridden for quite some time and was also suffering from depression,” said a family member to PTI.

One of the first Adivasi players to represent India at the world stage, Kindo was a full back and scored three crucial goals for India during their bronze medal winning campaign in the 1972 Olympics.

Hockey India mourned the death of the Kindo and tweeted, “We are deeply saddened by the demise of our former hockey player and 1975 World Cup winner, Michael Kindo. We send out our heartfelt condolences to his family.”

Though Michael Kindo was not the first Adivasi player to represent India in Hockey, he did go on to become the first Indian sportsperson of the tribal origin to be honoured with the Arjuna Award in the year 1972.
