Indian contingent reaches Jordan for Olympic boxing Qualifiers

The Indian boxing contingent, led by MC Mary Kom, reach the Jordan capital city of Amman on 28 February night to take part in the Tokyo Olympics Asia/Oceania Qualifiers. The event will be held from 3 March to 11 March.

The news of their arrival in Amman was shared on Twitter by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), who tweeted, “Destination JORDAN. Team India has made their touchdown in Jordan yesterday night and now with the countdown they’re all set for the #OlympicQualifiers starting from March 3-11,2020.Send your best wishes for our champs as they are ready to set the ring on fire! #PunchMeinHaiDum ”

13 boxers in total, across genders and categories, will turn out in the Qualifiers as they aim to seal their spot for the Tokyo Olympics slated to be held in Turkey from 24 July later this year. The Boxing Qualifiers were originally scheduled to be held in the Chinese city of Wuhan from 3 February to 14 February, but was later shifted due to the coronavirus outbreak. Wuhan was the epicentre of the deadly disease.

Before the Qualifiers, the Indian team of 13 boxers, held a camp in Assisi, Italy.

According to latest reports, more than 3000 people have succumbed to the coronavirus in China alone, while more than 84000 individuals have been affected by the disease all over the globe. The virus has now spread to Italy, India, US, UK, Singapore, Japan, France, Russia and Spain.
